Food Swap

Yes, we've all been there. Even if you're under a strict fitness and healthy program for weeks, everyone falls off the wagon once in a while with sudden food cravings. We're hungry and the drive-through window is just beckoning.

Whether you're a victim of late-night urges or afternoon sugar pangs, you don't have to destroy your progress by giving in. So before you grab the keys (or call 87000) check out a few of my healthier alternatives to some favorite guilty snacks. It may require a little more effort in resisting the urge to reach for a burger, but the payoff is that seriously delicious satisfaction of knowing you're feeding yourself well.

1. Veggie Crisp Chips instead of Potato Chips
Vegetables make a healthy snack choice because they are low in calories and high in fiber. It would be better than a traditional potato chips. If you're a potato chips lover,  eating 12 chips usually is equal to 140 calories and 70 calories comes from fat. That means that 70 calories in a single serving come from fat. (uh-oh!) And we both know that you don't just eat 12 chips right?

Baked Kale Chips, Carrots, Eggplant, Sweet Potato and Sun-dried tomatoes can be a great alternative for potato chips. Besides their addictive crunchiness, they can take on any type of flavor, from lemon to garlic to miso, and still be completely wonderful without all the grease and guilt.

Here's a link for a great Veggie Chips recipe and their benefits to help you cook this crunchy snack. And if you're too busy to cook a snack for yourself, no problem! Faburitto offers a great Veggie Chips for just P70. Check them out at The Columns, Eastwood Mall, Ayala Fairview Terraces.

2. Grilled portabello and feta bruger instead of Cheeseburger

Portobello mushrooms are meaty and have a hefty, almost beefy flavor. Even their color is somewhat like beef.

So If you're looking for a good meaty chew with fewer calories than the real thing, a portobello mushroom brushed with a little Italian dressing, tomatoes and put it in a bun will be fantastic. One portobello mushroom has about 30 calories and no fat or cholesterol. By comparison, a 3-ounce hamburger patty has 235 calories, 16 grams of fat and milligrams of cholesterol.

My favorite chef and probably one of those who really cook a healthy and mouthwatering meal, Rachel Ray, has an amazing recipe for this snack. But if you're in hurry, just stop by at any Cafe Mediterranean for a quick bite.

3. Healthy Smoothie/Shake instead of Chocolate Milkshake

Though you may classify milkshakes as drinks, it's time to burst your choco bubbles and tell you that they're actually drinkable desserts. They may say that it has a lot of calcium because of the milk but I'm pretty sure that there also tons of fat and sugar there. A large milkshake from a fast-food restaurant can contain more than 700 calories and that's without whip cream.

Instead of slurping milkshakes you can try a healthy smoothie. You can blend a smoothie/shake at home with non-fat milk or soymilk, and whatever fruit you like.

As for me, almost all my friends know that I use Herbalife® Formula 1 Healthy Meal Nutritional Shake Mix (chocolate or wildberry flavor) with banana or mango as my snack. It only gives me 150 calories, but it has high-quality soy protein, healthy carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, amino acids and without all the unnecessary ingredients that pile on extra calories.

I know that choosing a healthier snack is easier said than done. But whenever I come face to face with my weakness, a.k.a grilled cheese sandwich, I always try to remember this quote I saw from Pinterest. Now, I'd like to share it to you too, hoping that it'll help you get closer to your goal by eating one healthy snack at a time.
